2018 came with it’s own goodies. There was on one side, the “Afrobeats” that’s beginning to gain shape, transforming into some sort of Afro/Dancehall fusion. And on the other side, there was street music called “shaku shaku,” which gained prominence last year, and started finding it’s way into the mainstream.
Even though Wizkid and Slimcase linked up, D’banj did shaku shaku, Tiwa Savage too, and it all seems like Afrobeats artists embrace the new street style, it was a battle of Afrobeats versus shaku shaku. Who’s won so far ?
In three days’ time, we’ll be saying bye bye to March and that means a quarter of the year 2018 is gone. How time flies.
Judging from the three months gone, has shaku shaku been able to beat the Afrobeat or the “pon pon pon” sound is still the hottest thing, in Nigeria? We’ll find out. This might get a bit freaky, anyway.
Here, we attempt to list the Top 20 songs, so far. Not the best in terms of quality, but the hottest commercially. And, then we’ll see how many shaku shaku,
And how many Afro’s are there.
And how many Afro’s are there.
In no particular other, these are 20 of the hottest songs we’ve got in 2018; “Science Student by Olamide” “Soco by Wizkid” “Issa Banger by D’banj ft Slimcase and Mr Real” “Mind by Davido & Mayorkun, Dremo Peruzzi” “Flora My Flawa by Davido” “Diet by DJ Enimoney ft Tiwa Savage, Slimcase and Reminisce” “NoWo by DJ Spinall ft Wizkid” “Say Bye Bye by Ycee” “4dayz by Kiss Daniel” “C. Ronaldo by Olamide” “Apa Mi by Lil Kesh” “If I Tell You by Ice Prince” “Problem by Reminisce” “Ada by DJ Ecool ft Davido” “Burn by Kcee ft Sarkodie” “Shakpati by Yemi Alade ft Slimcase” “Yur Luv by Tekno” “Chop by Sugarboy ft Ycee” “Shempe by DJ Xclusive ft Slimcase and Mz Kiss” and “Balu by CDQ ft Idowest and Mr Real“
Now, let’s analyze them.
SHAKU SHAKU
Here we have bang tracks like “Sciece Student” and “Issa Banger,” at the forefront. DJ Enimoney’s “Diet,” and Lil Kesh’s “Apa Mi,” are hot too. We’ve got 9 tracks sampling the shaku shaku vibe.
AFRO
With tracks like “Soco,” “Yur Luv” and “Ada,” mirroring the Afro-fusion style, there are about 10 songs from the list which has a strong Afrobeat aura all over.
Ice Prince’s “If I Tell You,” attempts at bridging both. It’s not necessarily a street song, but it sure has that uptempo beat.
So, now, it’s left for you to decide which you love, ’cause it’s a draw game for now. BUT, predictions have it that shaku shaku will take over.
Meanwhile,
